Die Frühzeit des Verlages ist gekennzeichnet durch Autoren wie Heinrich Heine, Friedrich Hebbel, Ludwig Börne und andere aus dem Kreis des „Jungen Deutschland“, junge und rebellische Schriftsteller. Der traditionsreiche Verlag, den Kurt Ganske 1941 zunächst anteilig und 1950 vollständig erwarb, ist heute der Kern aller Buchaktivitäten der Verlagsgruppe. Was der legendäre Verleger Julius Campe einst pflegte, charakterisiert bis heute das Programm des Hauses. HOFFMANN UND CAMPE ist ein großer, erfolgreicher Publikumsverlag in Deutschland, der literarische Werke renommierter Autoren ebenso fördert wie Bücher von jungen Schriftstellern. Seit 1951 erscheinen sämtliche Werke des bedeutenden Erzählers Siegfried Lenz bei HOFFMANN UND CAMPE.
