Home of Our Own, Inc. (HOOO) began as a grassroots effort of local families struggling with the question: Where will our adult sons and daughters with special needs live when their parents can no longer care for them? In addressing this question, the families of HOOO became aware of the crisis in affordable housing for working adults in Wisconsin and for seniors on a fixed income. Through an innovative, integrated rental community called Prairie Haus in New Glarus, Wisconsin, HOOO is addressing the housing needs for all three groups. HOOO has honored its commitment to raise $500,000 towards the total $9 million cost of the building, the building is complete, and residents have moved in. Prairie Haus' residents have not just "moved in." Rather, they have moved into a community of people of all ages and backgrounds, who now have access to quality, affordable housing, with specially designed spaces to help create and foster a real sense of belonging. HOOO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that exists to provide ongoing support for social activities and integration within the rental community and larger community on a continuing basis. HOOO has also launched its "500 in 5" initiative, determined that grass roots groups can create rental homes like Prairie Haus in their own communities, with a bit of help.
