About Homegrown National Park®
Welcome to Homegrown National Park®, a 501(c)(3) non-profit co-founded by Doug Tallamy and Michelle Alfandari. HNP is a grassroots call-to-action to regenerate biodiversity and ecosystem function because every human being on this planet needs diverse, highly productive ecosystems to survive. We are at a critical juncture where the continued loss of so many species from local ecosystems will increasingly compromise their ability to produce the ecosystem services, including oxygen, clean water, flood control, pollination, pest control, carbon storage, etc., that sustain our lives. Our mission is to catalyze anyone with access to some soil to start a new HABITAT® by planting native plants and removing most invasive plants. This includes everyone, from individual homeowners to property owners, land managers, farmers, and individuals with the space for just a single plant pot! Our initial goal in the US is 20 million acres of native plantings spanning yards, campuses, porches, and balconies. This represents approximately ½ of the area covered by US lawns on privately-owned property. To track this goal, we have created the HNP MAP. It provides an interactive, community-based visual that illustrates each contribution to planting native as we create new ecological networks and restore biodiversity together. Be a part of the largest and most inclusive cooperative conservation project ever conceived or attempted and GET ON THE MAP! “Our National Parks, no matter how grand in scale, are too small and separated from one another to preserve species to the levels needed. Thus, the concept for Homegrown National Park, a bottom-up call-to-action to restore habitat where we live and work, and to a lesser extent where we farm and graze, extending national parks to our yards and communities.” - Doug Tallamy
