About Hope Filled Café
Imagine a coffee-bakery-gelato shoppe where every cup, pastry, and spoonful is infused with hope. Welcome to Hope Filled Café (HFC), my initiative dedicated to tackling the severe unemployment rate among young adults with autism and cognitive disabilities and the teen mental health crisis, one treat at a time. Here's the scoop: according to the U.S. Department of Labor (2022), individuals with disabilities face double the unemployment rates of non-disabled people, reaching an alarming 85% among those with autism and cognitive disabilities. Autism's spectrum presents challenges beyond high-functioning cases, and cognitive disabilities affect memory, focus, and problem-solving, compounded by depression, anxiety, and isolation when support services abruptly end on their 22nd birthday. Most work settings, designed for traditional employees, often lack accommodations, are overwhelming and overstimulating, restrict hours, and perpetuate exclusion instead of genuine inclusion. Yet we don’t stop there: HFC recognizes the crisis in teen isolation, loneliness, and suicide. Our team addresses this by providing a faith-based space within walking distance of the Orono School District where students can socialize, work, and learn together. HFC will make lasting impact on these youth with specialized job training, life skills learning, and competitive wages. We will create a wholly inclusive work environment and further expand job opportunities in the Orono/Long Lake/Wayzata area by filling roughly 20-25% of our jobs with young adults with autism & cognitive disabilities. Our goal is to celebrate everybody's talents in a diverse environment where everyone can learn from each other directly and meaningfully. Education bridges these gaps, and we believe exposing teens to peers with autism and cognitive disabilities fosters empathy, breaks down misconceptions, and promotes senses of belonging. People don't know what they don't know so spreading awareness is key.
