About HOPE Lab at VCU

Welcome to the HOPE (Healthy Outcomes and Psychosocial Equity) Lab, led by Dr. Ruth Brown at the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics (VIPBG), Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Our Mission: We strive to improve the mental health and well-being of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) by addressing healthcare disparities and promoting equitable access to evidence-based care. Our Research: We conduct research focused on enhancing awareness of mental health symptoms (including trauma), improving assessment methods (utilizing tools like epigenetic biomarkers), and optimizing service delivery. Our goal is to empower individuals with IDD to achieve healthy outcomes, community inclusion, and overall wellbeing through better detection, prevention, and treatment of conditions like traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. Our Team & Culture: The HOPE Lab fosters a collaborative environment involving researchers at multiple levels, including undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, all contributing to impactful research under the mentorship of Dr. Brown, a Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor at VIPBG.
