About Hope of Life International
Hope of Life International is a leading nonprofit international humanitarian aid organization dedicated to helping children, families, and communities reach their full potential by tackling inherent causes of poverty and malnutrition in rural Guatemala. The mission of Hope of Life International is, and always will be, Saving Lives. In 1984, Guatemalan-born Carlos Vargas abandoned his career to devote his life to working among the poorest of the poor in Guatemala, eventually establishing Hope of Life International and its Guatemalan counterpart, Esperanza de Vida. In their 39-year history, the sister organizations have been responsible for saving the lives of thousands of children in Guatemala. In 2021, President Alejandro Giammattei of Guatemala awarded the Order of the Quetzal – Guatemala’s highest honor - to Vargas and Hope of Life International for distinguished services to the nation of Guatemala and contributions to humanity. Today, Hope of Life serves more than 308 villages experiencing extreme poverty in rural Guatemala, leveraging corporate partnerships and international volunteer service trips. Focused on providing clean water, improved housing, income generating activities, community education and medical intervention, village programming aims to improve quality of life for vulnerable populations and impact more than 100,000 marginalized families each year.
