Hoplite Ink is a Virginia-based editorial consultancy specializing in military-themed fiction and nonfiction media—both written and visual. Founded by Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Tom Harper, a 23-year U.S. Army veteran and former Capitol Hill advisor, Hoplite Ink helps authors and marketing professionals craft compelling, authentic narratives that reflect the realities of military service, strategy, tactics, equipment, and culture. Hoplite offers manuscript reviews, script consulting, accuracy reviews, and developmental editing to elevate storytelling and honor the truth of military operations. The idea for Hoplite Ink was born when Tom, while reading a popular military-themed novel series, noticed repeated inaccuracies in tactics, ranks, and equipment—issues he had seen across countless other works. Drawing on his global deployments, combat experience in Afghanistan, strategic assignments at the Pentagon, and policy work on Capitol Hill, Tom brings unmatched insight and precision to every project. As a trained & certified Army Strategist and graduate of the U.S. Army War College’s Basic Strategic Art Program, Tom developed advanced writing and editorial skills. His work at the Pentagon included shaping national-level documents such as the Defense Planning Guidance and National Defense Strategy, making him a trusted editor for high-impact communications. Hoplite Ink is a disabled veteran-owned small business.
