About Hudson River Sloop Clearwater
In 1966, folk singer Pete Seeger and a group of activists decided to “build a boat to save the river,” envisioning that a sloop would bring people to the shoreline and inspire a movement to protect the Hudson – known by the Lenape as Muhheakantuck. Three years later, the sloop Clearwater set sail with a mission to save the Hudson through education, advocacy, and music. Today, Clearwater is recognized for our unparalleled environmental education programs, which have engaged hundreds of thousands of students with the Hudson River's ecology, history, and challenges. Our award-winning programs complement classroom learning and are aligned with New York State learning standards. In addition to education, Clearwater’s advocacy efforts continue today, working cooperatively with concerned citizens, elected officials, and state and federal regulatory agencies to protect and restore the Hudson River. Nearly sixty years after our founding, music remains a cornerstone of Clearwater. Each sail begins by raising the sail with song, and we gather around music throughout the year to celebrate our history and shared vision for a healthy and accessible Hudson.
