About Hull Urban Opera
Russell Plows founded the company in 2017 to create an appetite for opera among ordinary people in Hull and to generate a collective of singers, musicians and creatives to sustain it. We create new, modern and site-specific work in unusual spaces which are easy to get to, carry no stigma and allow comfortable access to disabled people. Our work falls into 3 streams: street opera, indoor work and educational work: - our street-opera is robust and popular and usually free. Last year's Cruel Britannia struck a chord with audiences and was invited to appear at the Glastonbury Festival 2019. - our indoor work can be more reflective like our recent mindful "Socrates" or flamboyantly entertaining such as our recent immersive Bumps in the Night which sold out all performances . - our educational work has included well-attended workshops on Opera History and A Day in the Life of an Opera Chorus, supported by Absolutely Cultured.
