About Humane Society of Jackson County
The Humane Society of Jackson County was established in 1998, a lifelong vision of Jackson County native Marjorie Butler. Ms. Butler was ahead of her time in knowing the need for a safe haven for the homeless animals of Jackson County and the immense need for spay/neuter. For a number of years her group of volunteers worked tirelessly raising funds to one-day open a shelter for Jackson County’s lost and unwanted dogs and cats. In 2006, our public low cost spay/neuter program was started offering subsidized spay/neuter surgeries to qualified Jackson County residents. By February 2007, now licensed by the Department of Agriculture we began rescuing animals utilizing and army of volunteer foster homes. Following the start of our foster program, we started our Courtesy Placement program in 2008, which offered assistance to families needing to rehome family pets. In 2008, we launched our lost and found program, linking citizens together to facilitate the reunion of missing pets with their families. When the economy started to slow down, the Humane Society stepped in offering to provide temporary food assistance to families in need so beloved family pets could remain at home. The Humane Society actively participates in community events, has a dog therapy group who visits local nursing homes and assisted living facilities every month and promotes humane education in our community. The future is bright, as we get closer to reaching our goal to open a shelter in Jackson County.
