The facility is a fifteen unit supportive housing program for women who were homeless or at risk for homelessness and have mental health diagnoses. It is intended as a place for second chances. Homelessness can become a reality to anyone. It is not necessarily the result of substance abuse or mental illness. An unfortunate accident or a sudden misfortune can render an individual homeless. According to recent statistics, in DC on any given day, there are over 14,000 homeless individuals. How an individual reaches this varies. In many instances, mental illness is a contributing factor. A homeless person affected by mental illness needs a safe home with support services that allow them to function to the best of their ability. These individuals can contribute to society instead of being dependent on the wage earning, tax paying public. This is where a facility like Hyacinth’s Place becomes necessary. The women of Hyacinth’s Place are given an opportunity to rebuild their lives. The journey will be long and challenging. However, our staff work conscientiously with each individual to identify those issues that rendered them homeless. Residents receive the clinical attention and education needed to address their mental health condition. Life goals that are identified will be scrutinized for practicality, for support and for achievement.
