There’s a growing global interest in hydrogen as a facilitator of a clean energy future. Hydrogen has the potential to revolutionize and transform society towards a sustainable future described by scientists as Society 5.0 or the symbiocene. In the words of economist and author Jeremy Rifkin and because hydrogen is so plentiful and exists everywhere on earth, every human being could be empowered, making it the first truly democratic energy regime in history. South Africa is in an extraordinary position to revolutionise its own economy and supply green hydrogen to South Africa and the world. The hydrogen economy is estimated to achieve global annual revenues of more than $2.5-Trillion, and create more than 30-million jobs globally by 2050 with South Africa having an estimate of R2Trillion or $150 Billion per annum. South Africans and in particular Black entrepreneurs, need to establish a unified voice to represent their interests; provide perspectives and facilitate conversations on positioning themselves as participants in the hydrogen economy and outline the available opportunities in this dynamic emerging economy. From this, the National Society of Black Engineers and the African Industrialists Association are collaborating with the most active energy thought leaders and experts to drive discussions around how this industry can truly live up to its metaphor of creating a truly democratized energy sector in which all South Africans and most importantly blacks are at the centre of its development.
