Hypertension Canada is a non profit organization - a volunteer collaborative led by researchers and clinicians - and is Canada’s recognized global leader in the prevention and control of high blood pressure and its complications. We are committed to advancing health through the prevention and control of hypertension and delivering positive benefits to Canadians, particularly to the 7.5 million who deal with the risks and harmful effects of hypertension on a daily basis. Our vision is healthy blood pressure for every Canadian. Our mission is to advance the healthcare of Canadians by enabling the detection, prevention, and control of high blood pressure and its complications At Hypertension Canada, we work with experts to advance research on high blood pressure. We also advocate for the education of both the public and healthcare professionals to ensure Canadians can avoid the potentially deadly complications of high blood pressure. Did You Know: - High blood pressure is among the top risk factors for death, disability adjusted life years (DALYs) and years of life lost (YLL) in Canada. - Hypertension is a leading risk factor for dementia and for other common and costly chronic diseases including congestive heart failure, stroke, eye problems and kidney disease. - Nearly one in five of those living with hypertension do not know they have it. - Thirty-five per cent of those living with hypertension do not have their blood pressure under control. - Over 90% of Canadians are estimated to develop hypertension if they live an average life span.
