Here at IBS, we are working towards our collaborative goal of extending the overall life of batteries, improving the performance and maximizing the use of batteries through reusing and recycling. As it stands, not many batteries are being recycled and those that are, are only partially recycled. This is a waste of materials and a strain on the environment. We are focused on developing an innovative battery monitoring technology that can monitor in-service batteries in real-time to determine the health of the battery. This will allow us to analyze the behaviour of the battery, monitoring the state, real-time controller design, management of the heat and diagnose the problem or faults. Along with some internal states of the battery, such as state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH). Our technology goes above and beyond the monitoring of batteries and allows us to remotely balance the cells within, whilst doing maintenance on the battery, no two cells are identical. There are always slight differences in the state of charge, self-discharge rate, capacity, impedance, and temperature characteristics. Here at IBS, we are evaluating how the old EV batteries can be used in energy storage systems for backup power, peak shaving and renewable energy systems. In the case that these batteries can’t be reused for their intended purpose we have a solution that will allow them to be used elsewhere for different purposes. Resulting in a cost-effective, renewable system that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating the need to manufacture new batteries for every application. We provide rapid testing of EV batteries to determine the suitability of the batteries for other ESS applications, maximizing the value of the batteries.
