About ICSD - International Committee of Sports for the Deaf
About ICSD – International Committee of Sports for the Deaf The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) is the globally recognised governing body for deaf sports, officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1955. ICSD organises the Deaflympics, the world's largest multi-sport events for deaf athletes. Held every four years, the Summer and Winter Deaflympics bring together thousands of athletes and officials from more than 100 countries. The Deaflympics are not only elite-level competitions, but also a global celebration of deaf culture, identity, and sporting excellence. Founded in 1924 in Paris, ICSD (formerly known as CISS) has a proud history of over 100 years of service to the international deaf sports movement. The first Summer Deaflympics were held in Paris in 1924, followed by the first Winter Deaflympics in Seefeld, Austria, in 1949. Unlike other sports events, the Deaflympics are specifically adapted to the needs of deaf athletes – including visual starting signals, sign language communication, and a strong emphasis on community and accessibility. In addition to the Deaflympics, ICSD oversees a growing number of World Deaf Championships in both individual and team sports, working in cooperation with recognised international sport federations. Our mission is to promote equal opportunities and inclusion through sport – on the field and beyond. ICSD proudly represents deaf athletes worldwide and continues to advocate for better visibility, participation, and recognition of deaf people in sport.
