About Idaho WWAMI
Since its inception in 1972, Idaho WWAMI has played a pivotal role in shaping the physician workforce across the state. As part of the University of Washington School of Medicine’s regional medical education program, Idaho WWAMI offers Idaho residents a unique opportunity to begin their medical training close to home while benefiting from a nationally ranked curriculum. Each year, approximately 40 Idaho students are admitted to the program, all of whom are considered Idaho residents. These students complete the first 18 months of their medical education—the Foundations Phase—at the University of Idaho in Moscow. They then transition into the Clinical Phase, where they train in hospitals and clinics across Idaho and the broader WWAMI region. The program’s impact is especially evident in its graduate outcomes. More than half (51%) of Idaho WWAMI graduates return to practice in Idaho, a rate that significantly exceeds the national average of 39%. This strong retention rate reflects the program’s success in addressing Idaho’s physician shortage, particularly in rural and underserved areas. In addition to retention, Idaho WWAMI graduates frequently pursue careers in primary care specialties, aligning with the program’s mission to support community-based healthcare. Many also complete their residency training within Idaho, thanks to the expansion of graduate medical education programs in cities like Boise, Coeur d’Alene, and Pocatello. The WWAMI Network itself includes 32 core family medicine residency programs and 10 rural training tracks across the five-state region, offering Idaho graduates a broad array of options to continue their training while staying connected to their home state.
