Having previously provided support for students and capital improvement projects at a Secondary School in Uganda, our efforts have evolved to provide employment for graduates, in one of 8 businesses we helped start to cover operational expenses at the school, with an eye toward self-sufficiency. The Obemezi Trading companies provide full-time employment to former male and female students, in areas such as construction, flour production, garment manufacturing, water, transportation, real estate management, and baking. In addition to covering operational expenses at the school and providing future employment, our vision is that revenues generated by the businesses will help provide food for local villagers most in need, and scholarships for former students that want to further their education. We’re also working with fathers to encourage them to support their daughters going to university, versus a legacy mentality of marrying them off for a dowry of 5-10 goats. We’ve had some early success with one former student who got the opportunity to attend university, now providing funds for her family to build their first house; and have a commitment from other parents to pursue a similar path, shifting a culture that has always favored boys.
