About Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant
SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) is a closed two-unit RBMK-1500 nuclear power plant in Lithuania which is now under intense dismantling project. It is expected to achieve the "brown field" end-stage by 2038 - to arrange power plant's environment in a proper way so that it would be possible to rehabilitate its territory and develop economic activity preserving buildings and infrastructure that can be used. INPP contained two RBMK-1500 water-cooled graphite-moderated channel-type power reactors, which were originally the most powerful reactors in the world with an electrical power capacity of 1,500 megawatts (MW) and thermal power capacity of 4,800 MW. Preparations for the construction began in 1974. Unit 1 came online in December 1983, and was closed on December 31, 2004. Unit 2 came online in August 1987 and was closed on December 31, 2009. The construction of INPP necessitated constructing 142 km of roads, 50 km of railway, 390 km of communication lines, 334 km of electricity lines, 133 km of sewerage lines, and 164 km of thermal lines. 3 544,000 m3 of concrete and reinforced concrete and 76,480 tons of reinforcement was used for the construction. During the 26 years of operation, INPP has produced 307, 9 billion kWh of electricity: Unit 1 – 136, 9 billion kWh and Unit 2 – 170, 2 billion kWh. The total amount of electricity sold is 279, 8 billion kWh.
