About Ignition Youth Development
Ignition is a non-profit organisation. As a comprehensive youth development initiative, working in Alexandra, we focus on addressing the inequalities and disparities experienced by young individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. We help them build the skills and character needed to transcend their circumstances to succeed in their tertiary education, their careers, financially, and in life in general. Our mission is to ignite the potential of youth from Alexandra Township by breaking down barriers to higher education and career success. We believe that every young person deserves access to quality education and the support necessary to thrive in their studies and future careers. We offer- Career Guidance: We provide psychometric assessments, one-on-one guidance career counselling, and job shadowing opportunities to help students discover and pursue compatible career paths. Mentorship: Trained volunteers mentor students throughout their university journey, offering guidance, support, and valuable insights. Training: We provide training covering topics such as university survival skills, finances, personal development, and workplace skills. Mental Health Support: We address the mental health needs of our students through educational initiatives, culturally sensitive support, and connections to appropriate therapists. Practical Assistance: We assist students with essential resources such as eyeglasses, laptops, and course-specific equipment to ensure they have the tools they need to succeed. Since our founding in 2008, Ignition has made a significant impact on the lives of disadvantaged South African youth. Graduates have gone on to successful careers in diverse fields, including accounting, laboratory technology, HR, engineering, social work, and more.
