The International Maritime Organization (IMO) have mandated that cyber security be an integral part of onboard safety management systems and must be audited. This change in legislation has given rise to a new maritime cyber security industry that has proven to be wildly variable in its approach to assessing systems and interpreting the standards. The IMCSO drives the standardisation of report that the relevant consumers of this information, including authorities will have the ambiguity of interpretation. The IMCSO also maintains a database of results from ships such that relevant parties may access the cyber risk profile of any given vessel quickly and cost effectively. The IMCSO is not for profit and exists solely to drive supplier standards across the maritime cyber industry.
