About Improper Walls

Improper Walls is a multidisciplinary, intercultural art platform founded in 2014 as an art association that aims to redefine art and cultural curating by recognising the social and cultural dimensions of both artworks and curatorial work. A diverse team of curators and cultural organisers work as enablers and facilitators for cultural impact and social change by initiating a range of high quality events and multi-dimensional projects that represent different identities, values and interests. In this way, we promote cultural resilience and consider how cultural background (i.e. culture, cultural values, language, customs, norms) helps individuals and communities overcome adversity. Using experimental concepts, we push the boundaries of these representations to reflect timeless archetypal themes and experiences in the socio-political mirror of everyday life. We create an inclusive environment in which complex issues can be freely discussed - through art. Away from our premises and the already well-trodden paths, we explore the possibilities of reaching a broader audience with site-specific projects in public spaces, making visible current issues such as mental health, gender roles, equality, discrimination, migration, climate catastrophe and sexuality. The sheer variety of cultural events offered by the platform is already changing the communication between the ever-growing members of the community and the public. This communication aims at maintaining dignity, respect for each other and building trust. When directed towards a transformation towards sustainability, art is a useful tool to enable a meaningful life in a sustainable spiritual, cultural and physical environment.
