About Indian River School District
The Indian River School District, located in Southeastern Sussex County, is one of the largest school districts in the State of Delaware. Formed in 1969 by the consolidation of several smaller districts, the Indian River School District serves the towns of Selbyville, Frankford, Dagsboro, Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach, Ocean View, Millville, Clarksville, Gumboro, Millsboro and Georgetown. Based on enrollment, Indian River is the fourth largest of the state's 19 school districts. Geographically, it is the largest non-technical school district in Delaware, covering more than 360 square miles. A 10-member elected Board of Education serves as the main governing body. The district consists of seven elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools, one special school, an early learning center, an arts magnet school and an outdoor education center. Its schools serve 10,753 students and its workforce is among the largest in the state. The district has more than 900 teachers and 200 paraprofessionals. The Indian River School District has 12 National Blue Ribbon School awards. In addition, five schools have been named a National Distinguished Title I School a combined 10 times. Its students annually achieve some of the state's highest test scores. In 2022, the Indian River School District was recognized by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) as one of just 3 recipients of their "Distinguished District" award. In 2012, Susan Bunting was one of four finalists for the National Superintendent of the Year Award sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators. These accomplishments, along with 22 state Superstars in Education awards and numerous other accolades, make Indian River one of the finest public school districts in the State of Delaware!
