About Indigo Rock Marine Research Centre
Indigo Rock Marine Research is a registered charity (RCN20069568) based on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula in West Cork, Ireland. Since 2008, we have supported research, innovation, and education in aquaculture and marine science—working across Ireland and Europe to build sustainable, circular, and resilient blue economies. Our mission is to advance applied marine research, promote best practices in aquaculture, and deliver immersive, skills-based training using innovative digital tools. We collaborate with industry, academia, and local communities to co-develop practical solutions to complex environmental and economic challenges. Current focus areas include: 🔹 Circular IMTA Demo A pioneering bioeconomy demonstration project using integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) to transform waste streams into valuable biomass. Based at Mount Lucas in Ireland’s Midlands, the project cultivates duckweed and freshwater macroalgae in recirculating systems, with outputs targeting sustainable food, feed, and bioproducts. It features immersive digital training and monitoring tools designed to upskill the workforce and support climate-resilient aquaculture. 🔹 AIMBIO (All-Island Marine Bio-based Refineries) Part of a major all-island initiative to establish a network of marine bio-based refineries, AIMBIO supports the development of circular blue bioeconomy hubs across Ireland. Indigo Rock contributes expertise in biomass cultivation, system design, and stakeholder engagement, helping to build sustainable, regional-scale value chains for marine and aquatic resources. 📍 Based in Bantry, Co.
