About Institute for Healthcare Delivery Design, University of Illinois Chicago
We strive for impact. We work in three areas: 1.) Advising: IHDD advises healthcare organizations, departments of public health, payers, and policymakers to improve the quality, safety, and value of care. IHDD is employing the methods of human-centered design, public health, and delivery science (see Research pillar) in collaboration with faculty across the University to envision and implement new ways of delivering healthcare within UI Health and at other external organizations. Advising Services are critical to our mission to support a culture of innovation, ensure that UI Health is primed to respond to emerging opportunities, and become self-sustaining. 2.) Research: Discovery and delivery science create the knowledge needed to improve human health and eliminate health inequities. Biomedical research consists of discovery science. Discovery science is focused on answering questions about the mechanisms of disease, identifying therapeutic targets, and developing efficacious interventions that could be used to improve health. Delivery science focuses on understanding the mechanisms and strategies by which efficacious interventions can be translated and integrated into clinical and community settings, as well as the harms and benefits of such intervention in real-world environments (that is, intervention effectiveness). 3.) Education: Our Education portfolio includes projects at local, regional, and national levels. The aims of human-centered design are simple: to make systems, services, products, and experiences that will enhance and improve people’s lives. The work includes the design and delivery of curriculum, as well as the design of student experiences and various supports aimed at meeting the learning and emotional needs of students. These objectives align with those of healthcare, and as such, health sciences education can be augmented and enhanced through the introduction of human-centered design into curricula.
