About Institute for Law and Society in Afghanistan (ILSAF e.V.)
The Institute for Law and Society in Afghanistan (ILSAF) was established in early 2022 as an association under German law. The purpose of ILSAF is to contribute to the understanding of law and society in Afghanistan. Our understanding of "law and society" is very broad–it does not only include all forms of state law but also Islamic law, customary law, international law and their respective institutions and practices. To serve its purpose, the ILSAF mainly aims to fulfil three goals: 1) it operates as a platform for research on Afghan law in a broad sense; 2) it offers open access to research results such as the Journal of Afghan Legal Studies; and 3) it forms a basis for science-based projects. As an academic institution, the ILSAF is independent and politically neutral.
