About Institute for Queer Theory

The Institute for Queer Theory (iQt) is a center of research, theorizing and international exchange in the field of gender and sexuality studies as well as queer theory. Commited to social transformation the institute aims at transforming a normative order, which relies on the sex/gender binary and on dominant heterosexuality. It critically investigates how sex_gender and sexuality are organized in ways that not only privilege heterosexuality and enforce a rigid gender binary, but also secure relations of power inequality and injustice through its entanglement with other social and geopolitical differences. The Institute for Queer Theory is a site where academic debate meets up with political activism and artistic/cultural practices, and where different forms of knowledge production and articulation form productive coalitions. It has been founded in 2006 by Antke Engel (Dr. phil.). Since then it has implemented a broad program of public civic and cultural education events in the form of lectures, workshops and conferences, facilitated research visits, offered regular working groups and colloquia and initiated cooperation projects in various fields of practice.
