About Institute for Sustainability Engagement | EFC Region 2
The Institute for Sustainability Engagement (ISE) is an academic and strategic enterprise that unites transdisciplinary practitioners and researchers to collaborate deeply with communities, accelerating the implementation of research innovations into sustainable practices. We believe that sustainability looks different in every community, and engagement is the key. By collaborating with local leaders and partners, we advance community-led environmental projects that center on the needs and priorities of those we serve. We integrate expertise in community resiliency, water resources, sustainable materials management, and ecosystem restoration to address communities’ complex challenges. As a boundary organization, we take a leadership role in ensuring local perspectives are heard, fostering reciprocal dialogue, and cultivating meaningful relationships with hundreds of diverse communities. ISE houses the Syracuse University Environmental Finance Center (SU-EFC), which serves EPA Region 2, including New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and eight Native Nations. Syracuse University was chosen to host this important center in 1993. While Region 2 remains a primary geographic focus for ISE, our scope is broadening to include the Northeastern US, the Caribbean and Latin America, as well as national collaborations and projects.
