It seems as if every few days, if not every day, we hear about a novel technology that can potentially change how we live our lives. In fact, rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, big data, robotics, quantum computing, alternate reality, 3D or 4D printing, gene editing, commercial space additive manufacturing and other technologies will have enormous legal, ethical, economic, social and transformative implications on our societies. Initial signs are already evident (e.g., ChatGPT and its privacy concerns, generative AI and its potential to overpower humanity, gene editing and designer organisms). To harness the benefits and embrace the powerful promise of emerging frontier technologies while mitigating any unintended negative social impact, the public first needs to have a good grasp of the nature of such technologies. An informed public can effectively engage in science policies that may prove crucial for the wellbeing of our society, humanity or even planet.
