About Intercultural Alliance

Intercultural Alliance provides culturally-based strategies and training to improve health outcomes, eliminate health disparities and promote optimal health and well-being through systematic skill-building within underserved communities in Minnesota. Bridging health, education & culture, Intercultural Alliance creates sustainable and duplicatable lifestyle interventions that restore and renew the health and well-being of refugee and immigrant women and their families. Refugee and immigrant communities are especially vulnerable both because existing health promotion programs are not targeted to the specific needs, experiences, and cultural sensibilities of these communities and because most tailored interventions are poorly integrated into clinical care plans. Intercultural Alliance has developed and successfully piloted a culturally tailored lifestyle intervention for the high-risk population of Somali women. It is an eight-module program designed to support and empower women on their journey toward optimal health. Working with the concept of “Food as Medicine”, the program brings a deep awareness of the important connection between physical, mental, and spiritual health, encouraging simple diet and lifestyle changes to support health, prevent disease, reduce stress, and experience more joy. Participants are lovingly supported as they learn how to integrate healthy habits into their daily lives. They are given a safe space to explore their goals, actualize their gifts while living in alignment with their faith. The Circles of Health and Well-Being program has demonstrated positive outcomes for participants, including improved overall health, reduced trips to the ER, reduced blood sugar levels, more energy, less depression, less inflammation and pain, and weight loss.
