About International Consortium for Equity in Neuroscience (ICEN)
ICEN Aims at Advancing Global Equity in Neuroscience, Bridging Cultures, Research and Mental Health Innovation. How ICEN was born: In 2021, at the Schizophrenia International Research Society (SIRS), the International Consortium for Equity in Neuroscience, ICEN, was born among colleagues that were diverse and with vastly different backgrounds. In 2022, the ICEN published a first study examining disparities in male and female representation in academic and clinical neuroscience departments across different institutions in 12 countries, including Europe, the Americas, and Africa (Kenney et al., 2022). The results indicated that irrespective of location and cultural setting, females are overrepresented at the earlier academic career stages, while males are overrepresented at more senior stages. Our definition of diversity: We define diversity as the wide range of human differences, that include among others, race, ethnicity, gender, age, social class, intellectual and cognitive abilities, physical attributes and abilities, as well as values and beliefs. People are different, according to the normal i.e. gaussian distribution of human attributes; yet simultaneously, people are the same as humans and belonging to the same group, the human species Where we are from: Our consortium comprises researchers from countries around the globe, including but not limited to Lebanon, Ireland, Italy, India, Argentina, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Spain, the United States, Sudan, Rwanda and Nigeria.
