About International Council on Disabilities (USICD)
The United States International Council on Disabilities is a federation of US-based non-governmental organizations, federal agencies and individuals committed to advocacy and action on behalf of the global disability rights agenda. Because of its unique structure, USICD’s core strength is its membership. Through its vast network of disabled people’s organizations and other NGO stakeholders, government members and individual advocates, USICD has the advocacy reach to impact critical emerging issues both in the United States and internationally. USICD’s Board of Directors includes the most recognized leaders in the American disability rights movement, providing a wealth of experience and strategic guidance to USICD’s mission and sharing a vision for the full inclusion, access, and human rights of people with disabilities worldwide. USICD's mission is to promote the rights and full participation of persons with disabilities through global engagement and United States foreign affairs. USICD works to promote the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in the U.S. and abroad through the CRPD Education and Advocacy Campaign. USICD is one of the lead organizations in the national movement for U.S. ratification of the CRPD. USICD has collaborated with the WiderNet Project to create the Global Disability Rights Library, which The helps improve the lives of people with disabilities in developing countries by delivering digital knowledge on disability rights to advocates, policymakers, and civil society institutions. USICD's Youth in International Development and Affairs (YIDA) internship program brings talented students and recent graduates with disabilities who share an interest in the international development or international affairs field to Washington DC to complete summer internships at international organizations in the DC area.
