About International Council on Surgical Plume
The International Council on Surgical Plume is a non-profit organization dedicated to a "One Voice Advocacy" for Healthcare professionals and patients who are routinely exposed to the documented hazards associated with noxious airborne contaminants which are referred to as smoke or plume. Plume is a by-product of ablation, cauterization, or mechanical manipulation of tissue when medical devices such as lasers, electrosurgical knives, broadband light sources, ultrasonic instruments, and plasma instruments are used. Greater than 95% of all surgical procedures produce some type of plume and yet a far too small percent of healthcare providers employ known safe practices. The mission of this Council is to drive education, support and review clinical research, contribute expertise to development of standards, support regulatory reform, and ensure compliance with mandates throughout the world.
