The Israeli Friends of Tel Aviv University is a nonprofit association supporting TAU's activities since the university's establishment in 1956. Today, with 9 faculties, 22 schools, and about 30,000 students, TAU is the largest, most dominant, and most diverse university in Israel - source of the country's finest social, economic, scientific, and medical potential. Located in the geographic epicenter of Israel's academic, corporate, and public activities, it serves as the focal breeding ground of the best minds in all areas, leading Israel into the 3rd millennium. To make all this possible, the Israeli Friends Association works alongside TAU to encourage the business and social communities to participate in and contribute to the university's activities – with the ultimate purpose of advancing common interests and promoting the continuing success, moral standards, and international standing of Israeli society and economy. To this end, the Friends engage in both 'spiritual recruitment' – building public and corporate circles of support, and 'material recruitment' – raising funds for research, teaching, scholarships, and facilities. The Friends officially represent TAU's supporters in front of government agencies, public and financial institutions, other universities, foundations, and individuals, to promote the interests of TAU, its students, its faculty, and other personnel. The Friends' success in fundraising and mobilizing support is the direct result of the connections they establish - between the needs and responses of TAU and those of various groups and institutions in the community. This ability depends on the breadth of the network formed by the Friends, as well as on TAU's being accessibe, through the Friends, to various groups: people with financial means, potential donors from the general public, the business community, and TAU alumni.
