About ISRIC - World Soil Information
ISRIC - World Soil Information is an independent, science-based foundation. Founded in 1966 following the recommendation of the International Soil Science Society (ISSS) and a resolution by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), ISRIC's mission is to serve the international community with information about the world's soil resources to help address major global issues. ISRIC is home to the World Soil Museum. ISRIC produces and serves quality-assessed soil information with global, regional and national partners. ISRIC stimulates the use of this information to address global challenges such as improved food security, land degradation and climate change mitigation through capacity building, awareness raising and direct cooperation with users and clients. ISRIC has been a regular member of the ISC World Data System (ISC-WDS) since 2011; originally, it was accredited as the World Data Centre for Soils (WDC-Soils) in 1989. For 25 years, ISRIC has been a consortium member of the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT). ISRIC is a member of Global Open Data on Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) and co-chairs the GODAN Working Group on Soils, focusing on interoperability of soil databases for better policy and investment decisions and risk mitigation. ISRIC strategy considers four priority areas: • Global Soil Information and Standards • Community of practice for soil information providers • Products and services to support sustainable land management decision making • Awareness, Education and Dialogue Supporting services include: • World Data Centre for Soils • Scientific research to support methodology development • Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) • Reference Collection and Library
