iTeach is a Smartphone App for rural communities in the developing world. It allows local ‘teachers’ such as the health worker, the literacy teacher or the agricultural expert, create simple step lessons combining images, audio and text. Lessons are created in the context and language of the community they are intended for and are transferred between Smartphones without the need for Internet or data bundles. iTeach empowers communities to help themselves. For example, health lessons can be created by the local health professional and transferred to young mothers on subjects such as ‘how to prevent diarrhoea in children’ or education to young men and women on sexually transmitted infections. Local experts in agriculture or honey harvesting, can create lessons which will help a family develop a sustainable source of income.
