About Jackson County Prosecutor
Located at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, Kansas City is the largest city in the state of Missouri. Just across the river is Kansas City, Kan. Kansas City, MO, incorporated on March 28, 1853, encompasses 316 square miles in Jackson, Clay, Cass, and Platte counties, Jackson County is home to about 683,000 residents and comprises 616 square miles, from densely populated urban streets in Kansas City to sprawling farms in eastern Jackson County. According to the US Census, the county's residents are 70 percent white, 24 percent African-American, 8.8 percent Hispanic and nearly 2 percent Asian. THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE Under Missouri law, the Jackson County Prosecutor's office is responsible for prosecuting felonies and misdemeanors. Jackson County makes up the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit. The office 's primary location is in Kansas City in the Downtown Courthouse; it primarily receives, reviews and files criminal cases submitted by the Kansas City Police Department; a second office is located in Independence, serving eastern Jackson County. Those include police agencies in Independence, Lee's Summit, Raytown, Grandview, Blue Springs, Greenwood, Sugar Creek, Lake Lotawana, Levasy, Lone Jack, Sugar Creek and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The bulk of the cases processed and tried by the Prosecutor's Office are felonies while most misdemeanors are handled in Kansas City Municipal Court by city prosecutors. The Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office mission: In partnership with our Community, the office is dedicated to ethically and professionally pursuing the cause of justice, promoting public safety through data-driven practices and providing a voice for victims of crime. The prosecutor’s office annually receives a wide variety of cases including but not limited to Violent Crimes, Domestic Violence, Fraud and White Collar Crimes, Sex Crimes, Property Crimes, Traffic/DWI, Drug Court and Child Support cases.
