One in every five people in the UK suffers from a physical disability or impaired vision with the majority having to face this as a shocking and unexpected diagnosis. A diagnosis that can feel like a sentence to a life of dependence on others with the loss of dignity and sense of worth that this can entail. Jewish Blind & Disabled is the only Jewish charity dedicated to transforming this future via the provision of mobility apartments specially designed to enable people to do the everyday tasks that are key to maintaining much-prized independence. We also provide essential round-the-clock support from our own resident house managers, 365 days a year which allows both tenants and their families to enjoy their independence, safe in the knowledge that there is always a friendly face on hand in case of an emergency. Our tenants range from those in their twenties to 100 years old and between them they encompass a wide spectrum of disabilities including multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, Huntington’s disease, heart problems, amputees and cerebral palsy as well as impaired vision and those disabilities that come with age. The one thing they all have in common is that, thanks to our unique facilities, they can live life as they choose and not as their disability may otherwise dictate.
