About Jonathan Yeo Studio
Jonathan Yeo is one of the world’s leading portrait artists and has exhibited widely in both the UK and internationally. For the past 3 years the studio has been exploring technology, our relationship to it, and the new opportunities that it could provide artists. We initially explored the potential of 3D scanning, Virtual Reality software and 3D printing to revolutionise the way sculpture could be created and the resulting works were exhibited by the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 2017-2018. Since then Jonathan has delved into the worlds of facial recognition, AI, big data and VR, and his toolkit for image-making has grown respectively. Seeking to combine elements of immersive art, filmmaking and innovative 3D capture, this approach has culminated in multiple new projects. Most recently in 2020 Jonathan released a brand new 'Jonathan Yeo Studio' AR app enabling users to visit the studio remotely, explore multiple forms of content and witness a brand new type of portrait sitting. Yeo's portrait sitters include such diverse figures as Sir David Attenborough, Malala Yousafzai, Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry, Idris Elba, Nicole Kidman, Baroness Lawrence, Tony Blair and The Duke of Edinburgh. Known for both traditional and experimental portraiture, his work has been the subject of mid-career surveys at the Museum of National History in Denmark (2016), the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle (2014-15), the Lowry in Greater Manchester (2014) and the National Portrait Gallery in London (2013). Other notable projects include collaborations with the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC and The Bowes Museum in County Durham. In 2018 Yeo was appointed as Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery in London and named Artist of the Year by GQ Magazine.
