About Journalism Agenda 2025

. . . Yes, we have an agenda. Pushing solutions to failing media business models, with innovative new funding models. A range of options centre around a new concept: Funding neutrality. You have questions already? Go ahead! Q. Why is this needed ? A. Globally, newsrooms have lost at least 50,000 journalists since the 2007 Global Financial Crisis - 39,000 in the United States alone. Old media have shed billions in market value. Q. Lots of people lost their jobs after the GFC, what makes journalists so special? A. One example is the US newspaper that famously exposed deep corruption surrounding child abuse in a major church - about two thirds of the staff that helped persist with that investigation, for years, have lost their jobs. Q. What would a funding neutrality project look like ? A. Under funding neutrality, for example, 0.7% of all aid funding could go to a global trust fund for journalism, similar to the Global Environment Fund. "Q. Why 0.7% exactly ? "A. This percentage borrows from the global target for aid. "Q. What global aid target ? "A. Signed by so-called "developed" world countries, aid targets are 0.7% of their Gross Domestic Product, in partnership with "developing" nations, globally. "Q. How much are you aiming for ? A. Based on 2016 aid flows of us$142.6 billion, a 0.7% x 0.7% formula for global journalism would yield an annual fighting fund of around us$99.8 million. "Q. A hundred million! What it would be used for ? "A. Averaging us$200,000 per journalist including operational support and security services, that represents nearly 50,000 new journalism jobs. "Q. One hundred million tho - isn't that just a pipe dream? A. So was the environmental movement, not so long ago. Q. Hmmm .. what if we've got more questions? A.
