About Kapaleli A.K.A Sandpiper
Welcome to my Indigenous owned shop! I am, literally, a Native Californian from the Northern California tribe of the ‘Kashia Band of Pomo Indians of the Stewarts Point Rancheria’ (one of 574 federally recognized tribes). The name of my shop is adopted from my native name, Kapaleli, which in English translates to ‘Sandpiper’, the beach bird/shorebird. I am also a direct descendant from a known Northern California Pomo medicine man by the name of Tom Smith. All items in my shop are handcrafted with love, heavily influenced by my indigenous background using techniques passed down to me from generations of elders within my family & Pomo tribe. Items with stones represent healing energy dependent on the stones used. The jewelry collections specifically with ‘Dentalium Shells’ incorporated in my designs are also heavily influenced by (one of the many) materials used in our tribal regalia and done so with respect to mother earth. Especially, if the materials used once housed something living, or had life. For many years, my Pomo tribe has implemented the use of ‘Dentalium Shells’ into our Native regalia and jewelry making as have many other Native tribes from areas ranging from Canada to Northern California. Over the centuries, these shells have also symbolized tribal members wealth & status (dependent on how much of the Dentalium was displayed throughout their attire). It was also used as currency between the mid-17th & 18th centuries. I look forward to doing business with you and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have, so please don’t hesitate to message me. Thank you in advance for supporting my indigenous owned business! * If you need treatment for a medical condition, please seek a medical doctor who is certified as a healthcare professional. *
