About Käte Hamburger Centre: Cultural Practices of Reparation (CURE)

The Käte Hamburger Kolleg: Cultural Practices of Reparation CURE is a transdisciplinary Institute for Advanced Study based at Saarland University and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the Käte Hamburger Excellence Programme. Each year, up to twelve renowned international fellows from science and culture conduct research at the Centre. The members of the Centre each pursue their own academic or artistic projects in the field of cultural reparation practices. Together with the fellows and the Centre's team, they work on a transnational and transmedial theory of cultural reparation processes. This research at CURE is intended to contribute to the reorientation of cultural studies. The focus is on cultures of remembrance and historical-political discourses, individual experiences of loss and damage as well as questions in the field of tension between nature and culture. The research training group deals with cultural practices of reparation in three main areas: History, Experience, Nature. In the long term, the joint research work should lead to a comprehensive socio-political understanding of individual and collective questions of reparation in a globalised world. In the face of existential crises and irreparable damage, such knowledge is of fundamental importance for future coexistence.
