In 2016, my son Amani's friend Rhys was injured by an opponent who stomped on his foot and broke a couple of bones, in a friendly under 15s rugby union state match between the Rebels and the Brumbies. We had travelled to Wodonga and that incident, ended Rhys's tournament. I watched one of the toughest boys I knew, limp off the field and I knew that something was wrong. The team physiotherapist dismissed it as a sore foot and 3 weeks later, his mother took him to the doctors, where the break was discovered. She took him to a physiotherapist where she paid $300 for hyperbaric treatment and she was facing a hefty bill for injections. She rang me for support and after great bitching, it was decided she would ring the Rebels and ask for assistance. Months of rehabilitation ensued and that entire year, I vowed to ensure that my "boys" would be protected from self serving practitioners who would fleece people of their money. I spent most of 2016 thinking about this and looking at physiotherapy courses. I spoke to my youngest sister and she suggested doing a Pilates course with Breathe Education. I enrolled and spent the year learning about Pilates but, Breathe didn't have it's own studio so we didn't learn any exercises in the certificate IV. We we reliant upon our placements. During the Diploma with Breathe, I spoke to a fellow student and she recommended Mat Pilates with Studio Pilates, where I actually learnt exercises. Realising I'd given Breathe education a $7.5k donation, I returned to university. One of the topics covered was psychoneuroimmunology or simply, the impact that stress has upon the body to produce wellness or illness. In my undergraduate degree, psychoneuroimmunology and psychoendocrinology were poignant topics that influenced how I lived. My mindset has kept me reasonably well and thanks to the influence of spiritual guide Eckhart Tolle, I eliminated anxiety and fear. What I offer now is a combination of spirituality, science and hard work!
