About KCL Vocaloid Society
Founded in 2024, King’s College London Vocaloid Society (KCLVS) is a student-led university organisation focused on Vocaloid culture, the first of its kind in London. Its mission is to build a community for all university-aged enthusiasts of vocal synthesis technology along with its spin-off subculture, as well as producers, artists, and academics in the field. Developed by Yamaha in the 2000s, Vocaloid™ is a brand of musical voice synthesis software that can “sing” when users input lyrics and melody, using pre-recorded voice samples (known as a voice bank). The characters created to promote these softwares (most famously Hatsune Miku) quickly gained popularity and grew beyond the software itself, and inspired a global, fan-driven culture of music, art, and creativity. Today, “Vocaloid” is often used as an umbrella term for the wider spin-off fandom of all vocal synthesis software, even those not under the Vocaloid™ brand.
