About Kent and Medway Pathology Network
The Kent and Medway Pathology Network (KMPN) and services across the region are undertaking a transformational journey through to 2028 and beyond. KMPN is a formal partnership of seven laboratories across three pathology services in four acute Trusts: East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust; Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust; and Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust and Medway NHS Foundation Trust which form the North Kent Pathology Service. It is currently undertaking a programme of work to form a single service across the county. Our 1000 colleagues provide blood sciences, blood transfusion and microbiology services for nearly two million people. Specialist services are also provided, including: Andrology, cellular pathology, immunology and haemophilia service. Each pathology department operates United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) assessed laboratories, many with 24-hour or on-call services. They provide efficient, high quality, accurate technical services, as well as expert scientific interpretation and specialist clinical advice to hospitals and GPs. As well as the move to a single service, there are four major programmes of work: Introduction of a Laboratory Information Management System that will manage the operations of all the pathology laboratories across Kent. GP and Community Order Comms, a single system for GPs to request pathology and radiology tests, with wider access to results is being rolled out. A long-term project to replace the existing disparate Managed Equipment Service contracts as they expire. A single contract approach is being developed to ensure the same equipment and methodologies are used across the seven laboratory sites. Planning a digital pathology solution which will make our services more efficient and flexible and paves the way for the introduction of artificial intelligence algorithms.
