About Kids In Nutrition (KIN)
Kids In Nutrition (KIN) is a nationwide student-led movement dedicated to enhancing food justice, promoting sustainable systems, and improving health for youth and families through food literacy and access. Recognizing that lifelong habits form by age nine, KIN equips children with essential knowledge of nutrition and food systems—empowering them to make informed, healthy food choices early on. We focus on marginalized communities, where disparities in education and healthcare contribute to a disproportionate risk of chronic diseases. Early food literacy is key to fostering lifelong healthy and sustainable dietary life skills, laying the foundation for preventing chronic disease, advancing health equity, and cultivating sustainable local food systems. Founded in 2014 by UC Santa Barbara students Michelle Nicolet and Angela Shields, KIN was created to address the absence of childhood nutrition education in schools. Today, KIN operates as a nationwide student-led movement that trains and mobilizes university students to inspire lasting healthy eating habits in youth, both inside and outside the classroom. Our three-pillar approach—education, food access, and family engagement—works holistically to provide children and their families with the resources and knowledge needed to make informed dietary choices. Through its initiatives, KIN’s vision is to reduce health disparities and prevent chronic diseases such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. By uplifting university student-led programs and prioritizing prevention over intervention, KIN empowers individuals of all backgrounds to take part in the Food Is Medicine movement—creating a lasting impact on themselves, their peers, their community, and future generations. Check out our website and IG to see our nationwide university chapters in action. Kids In Nutrition is an official program of Sustainability and Community Health Initiative (SACHI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
