"Sit back and enjoy a few hours of assured relaxation and harmony listening to the ever popular masterpieces of famous composers in the splendidly festive atmosphere of a packed house." This has always been the motto informing „Popular Concerts“, created by Prof. Victor Hohenfels and his wife Eva-Maria more than 50 years ago. Since the beginning and for more than 5 decades these concerts have been capable of attracting such a large audience, that their staging could take place independent of state subsidies. Held in Berlin Philharmonic Hall, today these concerts remarkably contribute to making the German capital the world’s major centre for performing arts. During the last 50 years more than three million concertgoers from around the world have attended these „Popular Concerts“. The most famous and popular works existing in music literature are presented to the audience, thematically grouped around series such as „World Symphonism", „Composer Portraits" or „Classic and Romantic Masterpieces". The traditional concerts held during the Christmas and Easter seasons include beloved evergreens, such as Schubert's „Unfinished Symphony“, Beethoven's „Eroica“ and Maurice Ravel's „Boléro“, while New Year's Day is reserved for Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with its „Ode to Joy“ final movement. The „Sinfonie Orchester Berlin“, with its Principal Conductor Stanley Dodds and many other famous conductors and solists, have performed since the very beginning in the stupendous auditorium of the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, one of the world's most beautiful concert halls, with unrivalled acoustics.
