About Kutenai Art Therapy Institute
We offer a post-baccalaureate art therapy diploma program rooted in the belief that the creative process is healing and life enhancing, and that art therapy makes a meaningful contribution to individual and collective well-being. At KATI, we teach and practice a relational, land-based approach to art therapy—one which attends to all our relationships, including each other, ourselves, our art, and all the sentient, natural world. We use the word “land” as it is traditionally used in Indigenous worldviews, as an encompassing term to refer to the earth, the water, the air, and all that live within these ecosystems. Land-based art therapy expands our awareness and creative response to the people we work with beyond self, family, society, and culture to include these larger ecological systems as the source and resource of both suffering and healing. Our two-year program is a unique mix of rigorous theory, ecological awareness, and an emphasis on relationship as the core of therapeutic praxis. The Kutenai Art Therapy Institute is dedicated to the belief that the creative process is healing and life enhancing, and that the expressive arts can contribute therapeutically to both individual and community health. KATI is dedicated to training culturally sensitive and responsive art therapists, and to providing art therapy as a community service.
