As cultural competence center for the region, the Landesarchiv serves as the repository for records of cultural and historical value and assures the access of archives in Baden-Wuerttemberg as part of the cultural heritage. It identifies, collects, and preserves state records and makes them available to all those who are interested in historical records. The Landesarchiv houses archival collections ranging from deeds from the Middle Ages to digital sources of our time (databases, e-mails, internet pages). The Landesarchiv has already been providing diversified access to archival collections via internet and is actively working on research and presentation of the history of Southwest Germany. The archival collections of the Landesarchiv convey the cultural and historical diversity in Southwest Germany. Each holding is unique and characterizes the distinctive history of the people and the region. This makes the Landesarchiv an irreplaceable reservoir of knowledge and experience with remarkable quantitative dimensions: The Landesarchiv houses about 146 shelf kilometers of documents and books, 310 thousand charters as well as 350 thousand maps and plans completed with photographs and audio-visual records.
