About Latin American Women's Aid
We are Latin American Women’s Aid (LAWA), the UK’s only refuge led by and for Latin American women and children. We support Black and Global Majority women facing gender-based violence with free, trauma-informed and rights-based services. Founded in 1988 by Latin American political refugees, LAWA works at the intersections of race, gender, migration and state violence. Our holistic approach combines direct support, community building and policy change. Every year, we support over 1,500 women and children through: ✔ Emergency refuge accommodation. ✔ Advice on housing, immigration, welfare and legal rights. ✔ Specialist counselling and therapeutic services. ✔ English classes and crèche. ✔ Programmes for women, girls and older women. ✔ Survivor-led research and systemic advocacy. We offer all services in Spanish, Portuguese and English, creating women-only spaces that centre safety, dignity and empowerment. Our vision is a world where all women and children can live free from violence and oppression. To get there, we challenge the systems that harm migrant and Global Majority women - from hostile housing policies to racialised barriers in healthcare, justice and welfare. At LAWA, community is our strength. We act together to survive, to heal, and to transform.
