About Lawyers against Abuse (LvA)
Lawyers against Abuse (LvA) is a non-profit organisation that works to ensure victims of gender-based violence in South Africa have meaningful access to justice by providing free legal services and psychosocial support, empowering communities and engaging state actors. LvA operates walk-in centres in Diepsloot, Orange Farm and Hillbrow, three commuities known for high GBV prevalence rates, high levels of poverty and unemployment and poor service delivery. Our work focuses on four programme areas: 1) Legal Services: LvA provides comprehensive support in criminal cases of rape, sexual assault and domestic violence assault and supports victims of domestic violence to secure protection orders. 2) Psychosocial Support: LvA helps clients recover from the trauma of abuse through individual, family and group therapy and counseling and supports caregivers of minors who have experienced abuse through individual and group sessions. 3) State Actor Engagement: LvA engages with state actors at every level of the justice system to ensure the law is correctly applied and victims are treated with dignity and respect. 4) Community Engagement: LvA conducts outreach and workshops to educate and empower community members around GBV and their legal rights and remedies.
